NPIEN Mentoring Programs Begins Soon

The National Pacific Islander Educator Network (NPIEN) is pleased to announce its annual Mentoring Program:

ASIAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE MONTH 9th ANNUAL SCHOOL MENTORING VISITS

In the months of March, April, May, and June, NPIEN Board members and other community professionals will be holding lunch-time meetings with Pacific Islander students for the purpose of mentoring.

We would like to provide a guest speaker for your students, for about 30 minutes, to talk to elementary, middle, or high school students about their ancestry, profession/avocation , and the importance of education. As there are few Pacific Islander professionals or educators, this is a significant program to motivate Pacific Islanders and other underrepresented students. Please indicate your interest and the dates you would like us to participate, no later than February 20, 2010.

Refer to our website, www.npien.com for further information. We have resources for Students, Parents, and Teachers. Contact Dr. Victor Thompson, Executive Director at (562) 496-2319 or npien.mail@verizon.net

Sincerely,

Falanai Ala

MOREHOUSE COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP

Hello everyone,

Morehouse College is planning to do an email blast to all schools with potential applicants during the final weeks of recruitment. Those of you who know students who show interest and have not yet went online to do the application, to please share this information with Morehouse College and myself. I’m happy to speak to your student or faculty regarding the program. Below you will find Corey Lumpkin from Morehouse College’s contact information.

We want to reach out to all of those Pacific Islander students who are currently juniors and seniors working toward their bachelor’s degree and recent graduate of 2009 with a bachelor. The only way for us to help increase the pipeline within our Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander population; we all need to refer at least one student that you know to this program. Again, CDC and APIAHF have secured four scholarships for our students to train and do research with a mentor at CDC; an opportunity of a lifetime.

I urge you once more to please forward your student’s name to Corey whom you feel show interest. Please don’t hesitate to call me direct or email any questions that you might have. The deadline for all applications is January 31, 2010. Important Notice: FINANCIAL STIPEND, TRAVEL ALLOWANCE AND HOUSING WILL BE PROVIDED.

Have a great week.

Thank you

Tau

NPIEN Sustaining Membership Drive

On behalf of the National Pacific Islander Educator Network (NPIEN), We would like to thank you for your past support of our organization. The months of February, March, April, and May are dedicated to our Annual Sustaining Membership Drive (ASMD).

 NPIEN is a Pacific Islander education organization that encourages students to go to college. We are all educators and professionals who work with Pacific Islander students.
 Since only one out of ten Pacific Islander youth graduate from college, your support is extremely important. Together we can reverse this trend.
 NPIEN is one of the only educational organizations dedicated to help improve the future of Pacific Islander students. We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization.
 NPIEN members visit elementary, middle, and high schools as guest speakers and role models.
 NPIEN’s goal is to raise funds annually to provide mini-grants and scholarships for Pacific Islander students.
 NPIEN board members speak at academic conferences and community events to instruct the community at-large about the obstacles keeping Pacific Islander youth from achieving their dreams
 The 9th NPIEN annual conference, to be November 13, 2010 at Artesia High School, Lalewood, CA, is a community gathering attended by over 300 parents, students, teachers, and community members – to improve college and career opportunities and introduce students to positive Pacific Islander mentors.

Your donation supports the annual conference, mentoring visits to schools, and provides grants and scholarships to students. By making a minimum $30 donation/pledge today, and no later than May 1, 2010, your conference registration is also included at a $10 discount.
