NPIEN Recognizes Students at Lakewood High School





NPIEN annually recognizes students, teachers, and community members that excell academically and extra curricularly at their respective schools, and make significant contributions to Pacific Islander students. May 1, 2010 is the deadline to submit nominations for NPIEN's annual awards ceremony, which takes place on November 13, 2010 at Artesia High School, Lakewood, CA.




Lakewood High Biology Teacher Elizabeth Campos was nominated for the Sevia Ma'ae Educator Award. She is the Pacific Islander Club Advisor at Lakewood, and helped oversee the donation of funds to victims of the Samoan Tsunami. Her efforts as club advisor has prompted interest from students of all ethnities at the school in the club's activities, and students not only share their cultural dances, but invite all to learn them, promoting cultural awareness and harmony on the campus.

Chad Ka'aukai and Lizelle Felix have been nominated for the Christina Diaz Student Scholar Award. Four nominated students will be selected for a scholarship. Chad is a 12th grade student enrolled in Lakewood's Odyssey Academy, Lizelle is also a Senior, and has been active in Academic Decathlon, Advanced Dance, and Basketball.

Senator Edgar Malepeai to Speak at November Conference



NPIEN received confirmation that Idaho State Senator Edgar Malepeai will be the keynote speaker at its November 13, 2010 Annual Conference at Artesia High School in Lakewood, CA. Senator Malepeai is the only Pacific Islander serving in a state legislature on the US Mainland. NPIEN is honored to have Senator Malepeai as a keynote!

ACSA Aspiring School Administrator Scholarship

A $2000 scholarship is being offered to an educator aspiring to be a school administrator. The scholarship is being administered by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA), Region X1V Retired. The scholarship was established to honor Dr. Donald Duncan, a long time administrator in Torrance and at the County offices. He was also a co-founder of the ACSA retired
chapter.

To qualify for this scholarship an applicant must meet these qualifications:
1. The candidate must be nominated by an administrator currently serving in an active ACSA Region X1V chapter.
2. The candidate must already be enrolled in an accredited administrative credential program, having earned at least 3 units towards the credential.
3. The candidate must be employed in a school district which has an active Region X1V charter.
4. Once nominated, the candidate must complete the appropriate application, providing proof of enrollment in a credential program.
5. Whereas, this scholarship will be available annually, a recipient will not be eligible to reapply. This is a one time grant.

Deadline will be April 15, 2010.

NPIEN is looking for some good speakers for our 9th Annual Education Conference on November 13, 2010 at Artesia High School, Lakewood, CA in the following areas:

Parents: Parent involvement, Financial Aid, College and Career Support, Study Skills
Educators, K-12 and College: Cultural Barriers, Best Practices to Motivate Students
Arts and Crafts: Lei Making, Basket Weaving, etc. for all ages
Dance Workshop: For students and adults – Micronesian, Polynesian, Melanesian dances
College Students, High School Students, Middle School Students (Combined or separate workshops depending on enrollment): College survival, Financial Aid, Networking, Peer Panel Discussion, Guest Speakers (Mentors, professionals from PI community)

TS and SAI Scholarships for Samoan Students

I wanted to let everyone know of a scholarship opportunity open to Samoan high school seniors in CA. Together Samoa (TS) and Samoan Achievers International (SAI) are partnering up to offer TWO $500 scholarships to 2 high school seniors who are planning on attending ANY college next year (trade school, community college, 4 year universities, etc.- all that are continuing their education beyond HS are welcomed to apply!).

We are asking those who are eligible and interested in applying to write a 3-4 page typed essay about an elder who has helped them to learn more about fa'aSamoa-- the Samoan way. Attached is the essay prompt and application that must be completed and submitted NO LATER than APRIL 9, 2010 at 7 pm PST,

The winners will receive a $500 scholarship, become a published author in an anthology, and be recognized at the Annual SAI Awards Gala held at Long Beach Hyatt!

Maui Hawaiian BBQ Fundraiser on Monday

Census Jobs for Pacific Islanders


The US Census is in need of identifying Pacific Islander candidates for US Census jobs. They should either reside or have an address in OC or are familiar with OC community. They need someone that speaks a Pacific Islander language such as Samoan, Tongan, Marshallese, etc. Enumerator positions pay $17/hour and mileage. OCAPICA is one of the testing sites and we are offering testing every Tuesday from 10AM-12PM in the OCAPICA Conference Room (12900 Garden Grove Blvd., Suite 240A, Garden Grove, CA 92843);
